Spain Overcomes Georgia 4-1 to Secure Euro 2024 Quarter-Final Spot

Spain continued their 100% record against Georgia with a commanding 4-1 victory, advancing to the UEFA Euro 2024 quarter-finals. Despite a spirited performance from the tournament’s underdogs, La Roja showcased their dominance in Cologne.

First Half: Early Challenges and Georgia’s Surprise Lead

Spain, who had previously defeated Georgia in both qualifying matches with an aggregate score of 10-2, started strongly. However, Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who finished fourth in La Liga for clean sheets this season, kept Spain at bay. He made impressive saves against Pedri and Robin Le Normand, while the Georgian defense bravely blocked numerous attempts.

Georgia stunned Spain in the 18th minute. Otar Kakabadze’s cross deflected off Le Normand and into the net, giving the Crusaders an unexpected lead. Despite this setback, Spain maintained pressure, and Mamardashvili denied efforts from Fabián Ruiz, Marc Cucurella, and Nico Williams. Spain’s persistence paid off in the 39th minute when Rodri scored a precise goal from the edge of the box, leveling the score. The goal compounded Georgia’s woes as Otar Kiteishvili was injured in the aftermath.

Second Half: Spain’s Dominance Seals Victory

Georgia’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia nearly restored their lead with a bold attempt from inside his half shortly after the restart. However, Spain soon took control. Mamardashvili saved Lamine Yamal’s free-kick, but Fabián Ruiz headed home from Yamal’s exquisite cross. Spain continued to dominate, with Yamal and Williams orchestrating their attacks.

Although Yamal’s goal was disallowed for offside, Williams made no mistake minutes later, gliding past Giorgi Gvelesiani to score. Dani Olmo added a fourth goal, showcasing a sublime touch and finish. Spain’s comprehensive performance ensured they remained the only team with a perfect record at Euro 2024, setting up an exciting quarter-final clash against hosts Germany.

Georgia’s Brave Effort

Georgia played valiantly throughout the match and the tournament, earning admiration for their efforts. Despite the defeat, they leave Euro 2024 with their heads held high, having made significant strides on the international stage.
